Freaky Friday: Cotier by Garagiste
Barnaby Flanders has been making great, terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Mornington for a while now under his Garagiste Label. We have to say though, he has taken things to another level with this new range of minimal-intervention, skin-contact, carbonic-maceration wines under the new Cotier label. These are ‘orange wines’ with class and swagger. One of the best range of skin-contact whites we’ve seen from an Australian Producer.
An exotic nose of tropical fruit, herbal and honeysuckle notes. The taste and acidity of fresh grapefruit and some whole-bunch-derived spice. The texture is one of the highlights here – rich and mouth-filling.
Golden in the glass; rich and pithy in the mouth. It’s a textural wine that somehow remains fresh and vital. Notes of yellow grapefruit, lemongrass and ginger. Spends some time in old oak.
2015 Pinot Gris
First thing you notice is the beautiful copper colour. In this, and all things, this isn’t your typical Pinot Gris: herbal, savoury and dry. Like all these wines it’s markedly textural. Notes of ruby red grapefruit, amaro and black tea with a chalky texture. Drinks buoyant and complex.
2015 Sauvignon Blanc
Super herbal, with notes of tomato bush and jalapeño. Plenty of spice and grip with hints of a tropical-fruit-and-herb hybrid.
