Wine of the week: 2015 Jamsheed ‘Single Vineyard’ Syrahs

Inspired by traditional winemaking techniques, each vintage, Gary Mills aims to express the nuances of growing season and vineyard site within four distinguished Syrahs. By doing as little as possible in the cellar, the result equates to four unique wines filled with character and charm.

2015 Jamsheed ‘Beechworth’ Syrah
From Beechworth’s Warner vineyard, this Syrah is 100% whole-bunch-fermented and encounters 50 long days of extended maceration. As a result, high-toned aromas of pink peppercorn are followed by a spectrum of red fruits, tinged by a sappy edge of black Kalamata olive and delicate mezcal characters. Inward concentration provides length and approachability.

2015 Jamsheed ‘Seville’ Syrah
Hailing from Yarra Valley’s ‘1000 Candles’ vineyard, this Syrah is grown without pesticides, herbicides or fungicides . Also 100% whole-bunch-fermented; notes of oolong tea and cassia bark provide intrigue, as red fruit and creamy chestnut elements precede a coarse tannin structure, which softens with air.

2015 Jamsheed ‘Pyren’ Syrah
Here, a darker and deeper set of flavours marks the experience as bramble, plum and Dutch liquorice lead to a finish of proud and upright tannins. Considering its 60 days of maceration, this 100% whole-bunch-fermented Syrah – from the quartz-laced pink granite soils of Pyren vineyard – is superbly concentrated and will surely benefit from decanting.

2015 Jamsheed ‘Garden Gully’ Syrah
From 1892 plantings of old bush vines, this Syrah was sadly affected by severe frost issues in 2015. As such, only 40 dozen bottles were produced from eight acres – twelve of which are luckily ours to sell. Once again 100% whole-bunch-fermented, this shows much more elegance and finesse in comparison to previous vintages. Cassis and blackcurrant interplay with notes of saltbush and meat to create a wine of drive and serious length.
