Wine of the week: 2015 Mount Mary ‘Marli Russell’ GMS
Marli Middleton (nee Russell), co-founder of Mount Mary, was the inspiration behind the label in recognition of her enthusiasm for our family to continue the pursuit of new ideas. Marli was an inspiring, adventurous and fun-loving woman, it is this spirit of hers that we hope shines through in these wines.
In 2007, Mount Mary embarked upon their very own ‘Rhône Project’ and planted “three white grapes: Marsanne, Roussanne and Clairette, and four red grapes: Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre and Cinsault” in a plot adjacent to their esteemed winery. With a view to exploring the potential of this site, they embraced Marli Russell’s pioneering spirit to create a new range, which although different, has thus far rewarded risk.
This, a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre and 15% Shiraz, shows immediate elegance as aromas of baking spices and black olive tapenade set the tone. While structurally supported with a wash of refreshing acidity and fine tannin edge, black fruit and raspberry notes remain front and centre throughout the experience. We think this is drinking brilliantly now, yet it clearly holds enough intrigue to improve with age.
