Wine of the week: Radikon

When Stanko Radikon – one of Friuli’s most humble and classically-minded vignerons – passed away last year, the wine world lost a true innovator. Stanko, who was just 62, initially followed the status quo by making wines with modern techniques and small French oak barrels, yet took a chance in 1995: the vineyards which his parents planted in 1948 were meticulously converted to organic farming, while extended skin contact and barrel-ageing in large neutral oak was employed to create orange wines of clear varietal and terroir expression.

This, he discovered, accurately represented his region’s winemaking provenance and promoted both positive idiosyncrasies and authenticity. Today, the winery is survived by Stanko’s son, Saša and continues to inspire a new generation of lo-fi winemakers.
