2017 Blackhearts x Airlie Bank ‘Grafted Editions #1’ Gris on Skins
From the jovial Tim Shand, head winemaker at Punt Road, comes a blend of Pinot Gris that’s partially whole bunch and whole berry fermented. Some extended skin contact and additional time in barrel has instilled lovely spice notes and a tannin profile not usually associated with the grape varietal; it’s different yet easy and crowd-pleasing.

2017 Blackhearts x Arfion ‘Grafted Editions #2’ Malbec
“Aromatically, straight-up blueberries,” answers Dave-bro when asked for a personal tasting description. “But because it was done quite lightly, it has that carbonic raspberry note to it. There’s a little kind of forest floor element, but I don’t know what the f— that means! I guess it just means there’s a little bit of leaf litter and it’s a little more savoury and toned down.” In short, this is an incredibly vibrant and approachable take on a traditionally misunderstood varietal. Chill it down for extra reward.

2017 Blackhearts x Ravensworth ‘Grafted Editions #3’ Nebbiolo Rosé
For Ravensworth’s Bryan Martin, the brief was simple: crowd-pleasing, textural, savoury and intriguing. The result? “I think this shows Nebbiolo’s typical floral characters, along with light red fruits, strawberry and a light berry tang,” he explains. “There’s also some spice and texture with a savoury finish – it’s really how I suspected this to turn out and I’m very happy with how it’s looking.”
Hilltops, $26

2017 Blackhearts x Latta Vino ‘Grafted Editions #4’ Nebbiolo
A buoyant Nebbiolo that offers both red berry freshness and classic, varietal notes of rose petals and earthy spice. With drinkability in mind, winemaker Owen Latta handled the fruit with delicacy to create a sprightly wine full of personality.
