Wine of the week: 2017 Nick Spencer Dry Red Blend

Gundagai, according to winemaker Nick Spencer, could be home to Australia’s best red wines; and considering what he’s achieved with this blend of Shiraz (58%), Touriga (31%), Tempranillo (6.5%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (4.5%), we think he might just have a point to prove.

On first thoughts, it’s unashamedly ideal for lovers of classic Aussie Shiraz (read: rich red cherry, plum, blackberries, dark chocolate), but closer inspection reveals subtle layers of poise and vitality – a streak of freshness, when you least expect it, brilliantly cuts through the wine’s powerful frame. Put simply, we’ll be drinking lots of this as the weather cools down.
