Wine of the week: Back Vintage Jo Landron ‘Le Fief du Brei’ Muscadet Release

We’re pretty chuffed to have received these wines – with some bottle age – direct from the domaine. They each contain all the lovely, and intense, varietal notes that we love so much about Melon from this seaside location: preserved (just ripe) stone fruit and citrus fruit laden with smoke and iodine-rich characters. Notes from Bibendum, the importer:

2013 Jo Landron ‘Le Fief du Brei’ Muscadet
This is a Muscadet at its most confident and expressive. Intense, smoky, iodine-rich characters on the nose lead to a pulpy, smooth texture, shot through with citrus pith, crushed herbs and an almond meal complexity; all supported by vibrant, powdery, saline freshness. A stunning Muscadet. $48

2006 Jo Landron ‘Le Fief du Brei’ Muscadet
A delicious, honeyed, nutty aromatic Muscadet. A fleshy texture is balanced out by the bright acidity of the vintage. Drinking beautifully now. The nose offers up floral, white peach and spicy aromatics while the layered palate is really where the complexity of this wine is at with baked nectarine, preserved lemon and honey notes as well as something a little woody (although no wood is used here!) and a punchy, tangy close. Lovely. $108

2001 Jo Landron ‘Le Fief du Brei’ Muscadet
This was a cold vintage and the wine retains the linearity and nervosity of the year. The vibrant golden colour shows the wine is fully mature, as does the nose which offers up complex notes of undergrowth, ripe nectarine and fresh mushrooms. After aerating the wine for a few minutes, spice and pepper aromas appear as well as some mixed citrus. $102

1995 Jo Landron ‘Le Fief du Brei’ Muscadet
From a sunny vintage where the grapes grew wonderfully ripe – this is a textured and complex Muscadet that is fully mature as you might expect. It opens beautifully with air. There is a bright straw colour leading to a subtle nose, suggesting apricot and beeswax, and then a palate that is quite textured and again with ripe, dried stone fruits and a waxy, butterscotchy development and a dry, sappy close. $108
