Brunswick East BYO guide

Rhiannon, the outstanding manager of our Brunswick East store, has taken the time to give some of her favourite local BYO recommendations!

THAI ON STREET (I only tried this smaller spot a few weeks ago, it’s a little more intimate than the bustling go-to’s in the neighbourhood and oh boy, it’s good!)

What to eat:

  • Scallops Yang, The Basket, Thom Yum
  • Papaya Salad, Pad Thai, Gang Ped Yang
  • Roti & Sticky Rice

What to drink:

  • NV Vigneau Chevreau Vouvray Sparkling Chenin Blanc, $38
  • 2016 Max Ferd Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett, $46
  • 2017 Claus Preisinger Puszta Libre Zweigelt St Laurent, $35

BAR IDDA (Ah, Bar Idda, just like going to Nonna’s, when you don’t have a Nonna but need to find comfort in a bowl of pasta or too many arancinos as you lose a few hours and feel so much at home. And yes, they do BYO on Mondays and corkage is only $10 when you purchase from Blackhearts & Sparrows!)

What to eat:

  • Arancino, Baked layered Eggplant, Salumi
  • Maccaruni Ragu, House made cavatelli Trapanese
  • Barbecue swordfish, Fried cauliflower, Barbecue pumpkin
  • Cannolo, Cassata

What to drink:

  • NV Orsi San Vito Sui Lieviti Frizzante Pet Nat, $42
  • 2017 Le Coste Rosato, $85
  • 2017 Lamoresca Vino Rosso Nero d’Avola Frappato, $50

TÉTA MONA (I can’t honestly imagine Brunswick East without this beloved, colourful institution. With a focus on tradition and fresh, seasonal food  being just the baseline to the buzzing service and atmosphere. You can’t go wrong with the shared banquet at only $39.5pp, but if you just want a few morsels…)

What to eat:

  • Samboosek bi Jebne (pastry envelopes filled with haloumi & feta cheese duo, parsley & spring onions)
  • Kousa (organic zucchinis when in season, or cabbage leaves, stuffed with wild rice & spices in a rich bean tomato sauce with pot yoghurt)
  • Samké Harra (chilli encrusted barramundi with fresh herb salsa)

What to drink:

  • Burnley Brewing Co. New World Pale Ale 440ml, $6.5/$20
  • 2017 Goisot Aligoté Bourgogne, $42
  • 2018 Aphelion Confluence Grenache, $34
