Wine of the Week: 2018 Lucy M Chardonnay

It’s always a fun time when we get Anton van Klopper’s new releases in, and this Chardonnay from Piccadilly Valley is maybe our pick of the bunch! From sixth generation farmers, the fruit comes from the ominously named Cemetery Block which sits on alluvial black sandy soils. It’s whole bunch pressed – with only the free-run fraction used for this cuvée – then fermented and aged on lees in fifteen-year old 500L barrels. While this shows some oxidative character and some lees-derived grip, it’s still incredibly fine-boned with a great acidity and some spice. Also totally sulphur free (beyond those naturally occurring)!
