Wine of the Week: 2018 Paralian inaugural release

Paralian – you may not have heard the name before (it’s ancient greek for ‘someone who lives by the sea’) – but as the inaugural release with winemakers Charlie Seppelt and Skye Salter at the helm, you know you’re in something special. After undertaking 46 vintages around the world collectively, the pair are now firmly settled in the seaside town of Port Willunga in McLaren Vale, and have set about creating their own legacy.  The focus here is on site and vintage expression, and in this they work closely with their growers to ensure quality and ideal ripeness are met with balance and varietal expression in mind.

2018 Paralian Grenache, $48
Sourced solely from ‘The Marmont’ Vineyard in Blewitt Springs, and grown by the Cross family. Dry-grown, hand-picked, fermented with 18% whole bunch in 130-year old wax-lined concrete open fermenters, then matured for nine months in old french puncheons. Campari-like spice, raspberry, cinnamon, pink lady apple skin, alongside fine tight tannins.

2018 Paralian Grenache Shiraz, $42
A nearly fifty/fifty (fifty-two/forty-eight to be exact) blend of Grenache from ‘The Marmont’ vineyard, and Shiraz from the from the ‘Springs Hill’ vineyard. This has a generous dark fruit profile, with satsuma plum and baking spices. The Grenache contributes a silken texture, while the Shiraz brings a richness of fruit weight – a great balance of generosity and freshness, alongside a drive of subtle tannin.

2018 Paralian Shiraz, $48
Sourced solely from ‘Springs Hill’ Vineyard in Blewitt Springs, grown by the Whaite family. Dry-grown, hand-picked, fermented with 12% whole bunch in wax-lined concrete open fermenters, matured for nine months in french oak (9% new). Blue and black fruit, dark spices, savoury drive alongside fleshy fruit and tightly bound tannins.
