Wine of the Week: Scintilla new releases
Oh yes, he’s back! Former owner of Green Park Dining and all-around good guy James Madden has been over in the Adelaide Hills making wine for a couple of years now, and even if the name has changed (vale Little Things!), his wines continue to be as delicious and thoughtfully made as they’ve ever been. The Scintilla (meaning tiny Flash or Spark) cuvées are organically-farmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and are free from any sulphur additions – these are fresh, lively, and delectable drops.
2018 Scintilla Ouille Savagnin, $38
Fruit from Mt Compass on the Fleurieu Pensinsula is hand-picked and whole bunch direct pressed into old french barriques before 10 months maturation on full lees. Bright acidity with whacks of lemon and a quenching salinity.
2018 Scintilla Voile Savagnin, $38
From the same vineyard as Ouillé – this time de-stemmed and open-top fermented, before pressing to barriques. Matured on full lees for 10 months, but left un-topped and a flor is allowed to develop. Great acidity paired with a slight oxidative nuttiness.
2018 Scintilla ‘More than White’ Roussanne Savagnin, $38
Roussanne from Tooperang on the Fleurieu – de-stemmed whole berries were put straight into barrel and fermented on skins for 3 1/2 months before pressing to old french barriques and topping with a smidge of Savagnin. Ginger and lemongrass aromatics alongside savoury palate and soft tannins. (only one barrel produced!)
2018 Scintilla Pinot Noir, $38
Beautiful Pinot from Mt Compass – open top fermented with 75% de-stemmed fruit and 25% whole bunch, then pressed into old french barriques for maturation. Bright, light, juicy red berries, nice structure, and beautiful acidity.
