Wine of the week: By Farr new releases
2017 Sangreal by Farr Pinot Noir, $92
From the Sangreal Vineyard – the oldest plantings (1994) on a north-facing slope over red ironstone top-soil heading into limestone and bluestone deeper down. Hand-picked, 60-70% whole bunch fermented with native yeasts in an open-top five-tonne oak barrel, before ageing in new oak. Well-balanced oak, macerated strawberries and red berries, firm tannins, nice salinity and iron ferrous character. Unfined and unfiltered.
2017 Farrside by Farr Pinot Noir, $92
From the Farrside vineyard, which sits on black volcanic soil over limestone on a northeast-facing slope. Hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard before fermentation with native yeasts in open-top fermenters before 18 months maturation in 60% new Allier oak barrels. Elegant and poised, with lifted cherry, savoury earth, well-balanced oak, a touch of salinity and a beautiful concentration.
