Wine of the week: 2018 Lieu Dit release

We here at Blackhearts & Sparrows are huge fans of the Loire Valley (aren’t you!?), but Eric Railsback & Justin Willett decided to take that love to the next level – founding Lieu Dit in Santa Barbara County, focusing solely on the prolific varieties found in the Loire. The regions and microclimates in which these grapes are grown suit them beautifully, and these are absolutely stunning wines that we’re quite chuffed to have on our shelves!

2018 Lieu Dit Melon de Bourgogne, $58
Made from fruit sourced from Bien Nacido in Santa Maria Valley. This is aged ‘sur lie’(aka ‘on lees’) as is commonly done in Muscadet, and beautifully crisp, with fresh acidity, lemon drop citrus, pithy talc, a fine minerality, and light saline oyster shell. The perfect pairing partner to a lazy afternoon snacking on oysters (as the label not-so-subtly alludes to). (Limited magnums also available, $114)

2018 Lieu Dit Cabernet Franc, $72
Comes from own-rooted vines planted at the Happy Canyon Vineyard on the east side of the Santa Ynez Valley. A cool vintage brings a brightness and fruit-forward profile, while a portion of whole bunch fermentation contributes a delightful spiciness. Lifted aromatics, fresh crunchy berries, cranberry, raspberry, and some bramble – balanced tannin and sappy flinty spice. Yum!
