Wine of the week: Momento Mori releases
Dane Johns (formerly of Blackhearts & Sparrows!) has been doing this wine thing for a little while now, and it shows – especially when the most recent two instalments in his catalogue are arrestingly good.
2018 Momento Mori ‘Give up the Ghost’ Greco di Tufo, $52
Greco di Tufo is a variety that we haven’t seen much of here in Australia, but with wines like this (and Valentine’s Greco), we think that state of affairs is set to change! This lil’ number spends nine months on skins in stainless steel with no additions, before having only the free run juice drained off to be bottled for this cuvée. Complex aromatics with loads of structure, alpine herbs, citrus rind, melon, tobacco leaf tannins, and a hint of creamy soda. Serious, delicious, and seriously delicious.

2019 Momento Mori ‘Fistful of Flowers’ Moscato Giallo Vermentino, $32
Oooooh yes my friends, the iconic Fistful is back and it’s better than ever! A blend of Moscato Giallo and Vermentino from the Chalmers vineyard in Heathcote, this sees nine weeks on skins in stainless steel before pressing off and further maturation. Exotic aromatics with tangerine and a bit more tannic grip than the previous vintage. Pure and beautifully defined.
