Three red wines selected especially for festive feasting.
2017 Greenstone Vineyards ‘Estate Series’ Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley, Victoria
There’s polish and poise within this award-winning offering, and complexity to boot. Look out for layers of earth and spice, typical in Yarra Valley Pinot Noirs, alongside bright glints of cherry, raspberry and blood plum. $34
2017 Nocturne Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River, Western Australia
Driven, foot-to-the-floor Cabernet Sauvignon – whoop! – from Julian and Alana Langworthy. It’s from a single site, the estate-owned Sheoak Vineyard in Margaret River, and looks like a medium-bodied “modern version of luncheon claret;” one that shows bay and tobacco leaf amongst fresh-fruited notes of raspberry and blackberries. $44
2017 Nick Spencer Dry Red Blend, Gundagai, New South Wales
A blend of Shiraz (58%), Touriga (31%), Tempranillo (6.5%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (4.5%)i deal for lovers of classic Aussie reds. But closer inspection reveals subtle layers of elegance and vitality – a streak of freshness, when you least expect it, brilliantly cuts through the wine’s powerful frame. $30
