Freaky Friday: Blood Moon ‘Eruption’ Cabernet Franc

On the heels of their cool-climate ‘Sang de Lune’ Shiraz, Blood Moon have produced this – a wonderful, sulphur-free, nouveau-style Cabernet Franc. Made more in the mould of a vital Loire Valley example – rather than an imposing Bordeaux – from a vineyard which teeters on the edge of a gorge near the Macedon and Sunbury border.

Whole-bunch fermented, giving the wine a whole bunch (so to speak) of the technique’s characteristic stalky, herbal characters. An aspect that sits in balance with brambly fruit flavours, soft tannins and minerality derived from the vineyards granite soils.

‘Eruption’ is apt: the wine really does explode with freshness, flavour and surprising complexity. The lack of sulphur and a light sparge of carbon dioxide gives the wine a slight spritz, that dissipates in the glass, revealing an energetic core.
