Wine of the week: 2015 Bobar Chardonnay
Tom Belford is kinda like the Fonz of the Yarra Valley: goes about his business at the top of his game, making everything look easy. This, his latest Chardonnay, is made from a blend of two clones (P58 and I10V1) from vines around 26 years old with only 180 dozen bottles produced.
The numbers, however, fade away when you take in the wine. The nose is bursting with freshness. Notes of fuzzy peach and white flowers underscored by a little butterscotch and exotic fruit. The palate is fleshy – yellow peach, nectarine, fresh acidity, a touch of leesy nuttiness and a touch of oxidative character. It’s exciting because it manages to maintain a sense of purity despite its ripeness and richness. A fullness that’s, furthermore, achieved without oak influence or sulphur (save for a tiny 20ppm).
Full of dichotomies: rich but fresh, textural but lithe, wild but composed.
