Freaky Friday: 2015 Domaine Mămărutá ‘Amassa’
Originally working within a cooperative of winemakers, Marc Castan felt an urge to produce his own wine and thus founded Domaine Mămărutá in 2009. Managing to recover his grandfather’s old vineyards in La Palme, the varietals grown remain true to the region (Carignan, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Macabeu, Carignan Blanc, Grenache Gris and Muscat à petits grains), while the terroir is a mix of pebbles and limestone – a particular maritime influence marks Castan’s output.
This, an ultra light blend of 70% Syrah and 10% each of Grenache, Carignan and Macabeau is vinified in whole bunches, aged in old oak and sees no fining or filtering before bottling. It’s light, easy and presents black and blue berries alongside a lick of cracked pepper. Give it a slight chill for primo summer drinking.
