What’s Wetting our Whistles in September

Here’s a little insight into what we’re currently psyched about at Blackhearts & Sparrows. Be it an exciting new producer, wines from an excellent vintage or super rare beers, these are all things which we think you ought to know about.

2015 Domaine Hauvette ‘Jaspe’ Roussane
Dominique Hauvette, a former lawyer, left her office job in the early 1980s for sunny Provence. She set herself up right by the foothills of the Alpilles and has since become one of France’s leading biodynamic and lo-fi producers. This, a beautifully pitched and textured wine, has been described by the famous Kermit Lynch as “probably the most delicious pure varietal Roussanne you’ll ever taste” and we definitely agree.

Utter Wines
These truffle farmers and grape growers are located in Buxton. They’re currently learning the ropes and finding their feet but the signs look quite promising – the minuscule amounts of Riesling and small amount of Pinot Noir which we have should sell fast.

2013 Barolo
A classic vintage which has delivered the goods. While the Giovanni Rosso, Canonica and Giuseppe Rinaldis have come and gone, our incoming allocation of wines from Giacomo Fennochio and Massolino deserve equal excitement. Keep your eyes peeled.

2016 Yann Bertrand Beaujolais.
Last year, when our co-wine buyer Adam Cotterell was in Morgon, he asked Jean Foillard’s son which Beaujolais producers we should be excited about. Without hesitation, the answer was: “Yann Bertrand”. These wines are due mid-month.

2015 Blackhearts & Sparrows ‘Diamond Label’ Pinot Noir
From Taturry in Mornington, these wines are honestly delicious, well priced and very expressive. We searched high and low to find you this drop which you can drink endlessly.

Super rare and cult status wines from the greatest producer in Abruzzo. The wines of Valentini haven’t made their way to Australia for a few years, so this release – which also features some back vintage Trebbiano – is one to watch. We’ll also have some Montepulciano and the Cerasuolo rosé on offer too.

2016 Basket Range Wine Pinot Noir
100 cases made. Here come the rumblings of generational change as a new generation begins helping out with an established vineyard in the steep slopes of the Basket Ranges. Subtle aromas of earth and smoke precede bright notes of black cherry, red berries and crunchy plum.

Deep Creek
Deep Creek, the award-winning Kiwi brewery, are now proudly stocked in each of our neighbourhood stores. These hop-centric beers are balanced, full-flavoured and certainly deserving of their recent success.

New To Øl Releases
We’ll soon be stocking a large range of beers from Copenhagen’s
To Øl. Experimental yet incredibly tasty, these beers have always been a favourite of ours and, as many of you know, are always better consumed fresh.

Boon Black Label
A very special geuze from one of the best lambic breweries out there. This is complex, intricate, incredibly dry and very food-friendly.
