Wine of the week: Arnaud Lambert releases

What a treat we have for you this week – a veritable cornucopia of Chenin Blanc from one of the Loire Valley’s rising stars, Arnaud Lambert (neighbour of the prolific Clos Rougeard)! Lambert works within the Saumur (and on the iconic hill of Brézé), where he farms organically and is in the process of transitioning to biodynamics. These are approachable, fresh, complex, and captivating wines, as well as beautiful expressions of the Chenin Blanc grape and the unique soils and sites in which it’s grown in this iconic region.

2018 Arnaud Lambert Saumur Brézé ‘Clos de Midi’, $44
This cuvée comes from a large single holding of 3.5ha of south-east facing vines which was planted in 1985 on light sandy clay soil over limestone. Whole-bunch pressed free-run juice is fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel before five months maturation on fine lees, and partial malolactic fermentation.

2018 Arnaud Lambert Saumur Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg ‘Les Perrières’, $48
From vines averaging 65-years old, sitting on silt soil over limestone. Whole-bunch pressed free-run juice is fermented in older oak foudres with indigenous yeasts before six months maturation on fine lees in old barriques.

2017 Arnaud Lambert Saumur Brézé Clos David, $78
From a 1.3 ha north-east facing site planted in 1965 on light sandy soil over limestone. Whole-bunch pressed free-run juice is fermented with indigenous yeasts in 50% aged foudres and 50% barrel (with 15% new oak). Matured on fine lees in 2-3 year-old barrels for a year, then blended and matured for a further six months in tank prior to bottling.

2016 Arnaud Lambert Saumur Brézé Clos de la Rue, $112
From a 2 ha south facing site on sandy soil over clay with a limestone base – half of the vines planted in 1965 and the other half in 1990. Whole-bunch pressed, the free-run juice is fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak barriques (1/3 new), and then matured in the same barrels on fine lees for 2 years, with no malolactic fermentation.
