When talking about Domaine Philippe Robert,it's hard to escape their close relationship with the very famous Rousseau family of Gevrey-Chambertin... and while that's an easy sales pitch to lean on, these wines have no problem speaking for themselves in their own right.
Barely known outside of France, they keep a very low profile and typically sell almost everything to their mailing list and also to longterm customers at French restaurants.
These are very simply great drinking wines and provide an excellent option to explore the more northerly origins of the Côte du Nuits. Their humble nature is a window into Burgundy (and Burgundy prices!) of the past and all four cuvées provide immense value at a time when value is not often used to describe the wines of this region...
PHILIPPE ROBERT MARSANNAY LES RONCOYS ROUGE - $54
A beautifully extracted expression of Pinot Noir. Loganberry and spice, with chewy tannins, sweet oak, and nice highlights.
PHILIPPE ROBERT BOURGOGNE ROUGE - $48
Full of plump currants and a nice mineral sweep, this is humble, old world Pinot Noir - and outstanding value for Burgundy, at that.
PHILIPPE ROBERT MARSANNAY CHAMPS-PERDRIX - $54
A serious and composed Burgundy. Woodland aromatics lead to red fruit, a hint of terracotta, and a mineral edge. Beautifully structured.
PHILIPPE ROBERT FIXIN ENTRE DEUX VELLES - $58
Wonderfully fine, with great lift and energy. Aromatically complex, with red forestal fruits, red cherry, a nice tension, and a finessed tannin line. Outstanding.
