After a visit to the Hebridian island of Islay off Scotland's west coast, Damien Newton-Brown was inspired by the peaty, maritime-influenced whiskies produced on the island that have earned themselves a distinctive reputation. Having spent numerous summers holidaying on Flinders Island as a child, Damien saw many parallels between the Hebrides and the Furneaux islands off Tasmania's northeast coast. Damien founded Furneaux Distillery in the remote town of Whitemark on Flinders Island in 2019 and enlisted the expertise of master distiller Tom Ambroz to run the operation. Using Tasmanian malted barley and locally sourced peat, these spirits are a unique reflection of the rugged, remote nature of Flinders Island and are a must-try for lovers of peated whiskies.

The Smoky Wedding Double Oak is a blend of two separate casks that the team at Furneaux have been patiently ageing: one ex-Tawny cask containing Flinders Island peated malt aged for two and a half years, and one ex-Bourbon cask containing Scottish peated malt aged for three and a half years. As the name implies, it is a beautiful marriage of both Scottish and Flinders Island peat flavours, making for a decadent and complex dram.
