In many ways, Daniel Bouland is the antithesis of Beaujolais' reputation circa the 1970s and 80s. Known as one of the region's more reclusive producers, Bouland tends to his rustic, predominately old vine vineyards all by himself, with holdings across the Morgon lieux-dits of Corcelette, Bellevue, and Delys. His wines are bold, structured, and incredibly layered, offering a wonderful reference point for how versatile and brooding Gamay can be.
Bouland's Chiroubles Chatenay is perhaps the lightest cuvée from the 2020 release, showing wild strawberry and ripe cherry notes alongside saline minerals and savoury thyme. Earthy pumice stone tannins provide wonderful depth and intrigue.
