This vintage is a little deeper thanks to a long and cool growing season. The fruit spent 2 weeks on skins, and 5 months in Slavonian oak then 3 months in stainless, making for a profile that’s all raspberry, cherry, blueberry and bramble fruits. Look out for a lovely chalky edge, some cooling herb and a brisk acidity that’ll have it pairing amazingly well with all your favourite summer feasts.

Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie 2014 Magnum

The 2015 Côte Rôtie was scheduled to be bottled not long after my visit. This is an undeniably great vintage at this address, even if Jean-Paul prefers his 2016s, calling 2015 “too much.” It’s worth pointing out that he thought the same about his 1991, which is a borderline perfect wine today. The 2015 sports a deep ruby/purple colour to go with searing notes of pepper, smoked meats, flowers, and assorted black and blue fruits. With full-bodied richness, a concentrated, thick mid-palate, sweet, yet present tannin, and a huge finish, this is a wine to back up the truck for. There is no better way to develop an understanding of the different expressions of the single vineyard sites of Cote Rotie than by tasting from barrel in Jean-Paul Jamet's underground bunker - especially in a vintage like 2016. 'You smell the terroir first in 2016; in 2015, you smell the vintage first,' he says. Whereas his wonderful 2015 has a lush, easy-going charm, the 2016 is more tailored and precise. Moving from Les Lezards to Gerine, then Fongeant, Le Plomb and La Landonne, each barrel has its own marked character. A lick of fresh acidity peaks at the end, helping it to hold its own when paired with tomato-based pasta sauces. Delicious.

Lenotti Bardolino Classico 2019

This year's Parco Pinot Noir uses 100% Mornington fruit from Rivendell Vineyard. And the premise of this vintage remains the same—to create wines that are fresh, delicious, and ready to be enjoyed right now! This release is honest and uncomplicated, whole berries were fermented and pressed as soon as they are 'dry', with various ferments blended by Bill on a chilly winter's day at his Gippsland winery. Wild cherries, red currants, and some gentle ribbons of tannin are woven through a crunchy acid line. There's a touch of forestal savouriness—as we'd expect from Pinot—but this is mostly about vivid lively fruit and pure drinking enjoyment. We love a tumbler of this wine while lighting the BBQ and we think you will too—though of course, if fancy glassware's more your style, this drop will be just as home there too.
