ABOUT PROSECCO
Prosecco is, without a doubt, the most popular sparkling wine style in the world. In fact, the world drinks more Prosecco annually than both Champagne and Spanish Cava combined. Its effortless charm, drinkability and comparative affordability are key selling points, though there’s more to this humble fizz than we often give credit for. Hailing from northeast Italy, Prosecco is made from the Glera grape variety, which was formerly known as simply ‘Prosecco’. Unlike Champagne or other Traditional Method sparkling wines, Prosecco gets its bubbles by being placed inside a large sealed vat and dosed with sugar and yeast, kickstarting a secondary fermentation and carbonating the whole wine in one go. This method is far more efficient and cost-effective than carbonating bottles individually, hence why a bottle of Prosecco tends not to fetch as high a price as a Traditional Method sparkling wine. Regardless of the price tag (or perhaps because of,) we’ll still gladly raise a glass to this energetic sparkling wine!
