Like rolling/sliding down an icy hill on a lemon that needed another couple of days – are lemons just meant to drop? It’s not tart, there’s lime leaf and lees for breath and texture. So perfect with cos lettuce, bagna cuada and comte in the afternoon.

Babche Farmers Fizz Pet Nat 2024

A full wild fermentation that took place in large format oak and leaves you with plenty of grapefruit snap and tart strawberries in the glass. It’s a great lunch wine and will do well with quince, cheese and chatter.

Fermented entirely in stainless steel to let the Grigio take centre stage and taste just like how you want Grigio from King Valley to taste, with that stone fruit, some sublime pear, and gentle acidity.

From the guitarist, Matthew Aulich who was a founding member of Hobart band The Paradise Hotel, comes an annual hit that’s full of red frogs, red cherries and currants. It’s super good with a lazy summer evening pizza, and you can even put it in the fridge to dial up the refreshment.

Palate bounces with nectarine and blond cashew that are all pulled along, playing with a little leesy texture after the curtain is drawn. Pour for intrigue, sip for love.

Soumah – South of Maroondah so this wine’s all about place and optimising the conditions to come up with something that speaks for the year, with just a little bit of the winemakers’ inflection. Marzemino is traditionally a Trentino grape that’s robust and full of big, dark fruits, some lovely savoury tones, and chalky tannins. This nails that, but gives just a little Yarra brightness and approachability.

One of our most inviting wines for Bordeaux and Syrah/Cabernet lovers. This is heaven at a BBQ, and has that moreish, sleek oak polish 99% of wine drinkers absolutely crave. Pure silk; but with tobacco and some plummy richness (thanks Malbec), which bulks up all the bright blueberries.

Eck Wines Pohlman's Creek Rouge Cuvée 2022

Semi carbonic and fermented half whole bunch. There's nothing country club about this Pinot and in the glass you get that personality through light raspberry leaf, herbs and a fleshy, vermouth vibe that makes for just a little, bitter snap.

Cab. Franc. It’s ‘IN’ at the moment, and why wouldn’t it be? Value-laden, and full of a firm but balanced tannin that’s kept fresh with red currants and a smidge of herbaceous beetroot and lengthhhhhhhhhh. Thought-provoking, delicious, and from a winemaker who’s making everyone stand-up and take notice.

Alessandro Stefani Franc Cabernet Franc 2022

Need a sure thing that lets you know you're making all the right choices? Here it is with an unbelievable profile. Pours deep purple and has a weave of dark spices and star anise, plus some cassis and currants. Very French for Geelong, from those fruits to the acidity and unfolding effect you get as you drink. Absolutely cellarable.

Avani’s Amrit Gris is one of our favourite wines coming out of Mornington and sends us to the gardens, parks and beaches annually with big smiles and a Jura-esque experience. What does that even mean you ask? Think of it as a grippy feel with plenty of nectarine and grapefruit that has a little oxidative breath.

The gateway Jasper Hill. Beware, the path to the bigger-sibling ‘Paddocks’ is paved with $100+ wines. These grapes are mostly from Colbinabbin, but blended with another Heathcote site. It’s delicate and full of smooth tannins and vibrant red plums, so everyone at the dinner table will feel the charm. Crimson! It pours crimson!

Iconic. Sits in the glass full of fleshy lemon wax, and some salty melon notes too. Take it to lunch and sip your way through both mediocre and brilliantly engaging conversations with flavour! It’s great gifting wine and one for your Australian bucket list.

Pretty peonies and rose petals blossom in every glass so pour, pour, pour away until your heart’s hydrated and the bottle’s empty. Hits with some chalky tannin and a little bright, but fleshy fruit.

All melody, no naïvety. This is the latest in our series on place and focuses on a darling region, Heathcote. This has everything we love because home is where we want to be, so there’s mulberry, peonies, compote spice and liqueured forest berries delivered glass after glass. There’s no need to speak in tongues, this is approachable and for everyone at the table.
